Flow Measurement in Open Channels


The proportions of quantities entering wastewater treatment plants are an important criterion for the effective control of this complex system. The amount of air entering the aeration pool depends on the proportion of wastewater entering the facility. This controls the activity and effectiveness of bacteria that break down pollutants. Non-contact measurement is generally recommended to prevent contamination of the sensors from the high solid waste content in the wastewater.

Flow measurement with the MICROSON 551

Since the flow unit in the ducts changes in proportion to the level height, the MICROSON 551 ultrasonic sensor with non-contact measurement principle is the ideal solution in such specific measurement situations. Without touching the product and without the risk of contamination, the sensor can accurately measure the level and with it the instantaneous flow unit. All joint channel profiles such as Venturi, V-Notch weir are included in the sensor software and pre-programmed. Other channel profiles with properties can also be easily programmed by entering index values.

For more difficult conditions - MICROPULS 61

Radar sensors such as the MICROPULS 61 are also suitable for measuring flow rates in open channels. In chemical plants and foamy processes where the temperature of wastewater varies considerably or where solvents are present in the wastewater, a radar level sensor is especially recommended for wastewater treatment.
